Came across a nice little template of 4 questions that can be used by a leader who is asked to teach other leaders, so that they can make their content forceful, coherent, and authentic. They were drawn up by Noel Tichy, the person who led Crotonville (GE’s legendary leadership institute, where they pioneered Leaders Teaching Leaders). He suggests we ask leaders to transmit the following themes in their leadership sessions, and provides questions to help leaders formulate messages around those themes:
Ideas
How does your business make money and win in the marketplace?
Values
What behaviors are required to put your business ideas into practice?
Emotional Energy
How do you keep people motivated and working with high energy?
Edge
Which difficult decisions must be made?
All of this must be richly illustrated with examples that they can color and project with the passion of a personal story. I have always believed that the key to good leadership development is to use the master-apprentice archetype as its core pedagogical principle (previously talked about here), flanked of course with a raft of other rich learning experiences. It is like veteran mountaineering guides (who’ve had their share of misadventure) taking rookies up with them (telling stories along the way), rather than a geography teacher explaining mountain topography and talking about the science and technique.
