Seeing Patterns

This is a Blog about Human Resources, in the widest sense of the word. It encompasses such HR “trade” topics as Talent, Leadership, Corporate Culture and Organizational Development. But more importantly it seeks to capture the experience of being human, both at work and at home – feeling part of the invisible fabric that connects everyone and everything.

My approach is to derive insights by trying to nail elusive patterns, and seeing non-obvious connections. I extensively use metaphor, literary allusion, juxtaposition, and analogy, to try and see things with a fresh pair of eyes. One of my favorite quotes is by TS Eliot: “the end of all our explorations will be to arrive at where we started and see the place for the first time”.

I choicefully use a rich palette of words, to try and harpoon subtleties and nuances of meaning and emotion, intentionally privileging vividness and exactness over accessibility. This may come across as pomposity to some, but as a lifelong logophile I have always enjoyed zesty expression and use of the mot juste. I have attempted to make my allusions and references accessible by hyperlinking them to any convenient description/ elaboration I found on the net.

My profile and predispositions naturally led to a Blog like this. My core has always been HR, but I have made multiple excursions to other functions, allowing me to join dots that usually lie too far apart. Also, “Connectedness” is one of my top 5 strengths in the Gallup Strengths Finder. Gallup defines it as: “People exceptionally talented in the Connectedness theme have faith in the links among all things. They believe there are few coincidences and that almost every event has meaning.”

I launched this Blog under a different name in August 2007 as a way of processing and refining my thoughts through expression, metabolizing my experiences to unlock hidden learnings, and articulating ideas that usually remained inchoate and unattended in my mind – a kind of self-discovery through journal-keeping. The present incarnation is an attempt to embrace the kind of themes it seems to have most consistently focused on, and roll with it. I have updated it quite erratically thus far, so cannot say how things will go. Let’s see…
